"generation after generation.... same trusted brand"
Welcome to Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch |
||||
The Cross family has been selling purebred Hereford bulls and bred heifers to ranchers in western Canada and the USA since 1953. We run about 200 purebred cows and sell between 40 and 50 bulls every year. The majority of these bulls are sold by private treaty. We also offer packages of bred heifers in the fall.
We have made significant management changes to the operation in the last few years, moving back calving, so we can calve our cows out on pasture and include winter grazing as part of our forage management plan. Like many ranching operations helpis limited so we try to run our program in a practical fashion, just as our ranch customers try to do.
The base of Bar Pipe females has been augmented with the purchase of the Kallal Hereford Ranch cowherd. Developing a top quality polled line at Bar Pipe is another priority while still focusing on producing functional and easy keeping cattle to fit the times. Despite the many changes the past few years our overall mission remains true: to build a better cow herd using sound breeding and science.
The ranch is located in the foothills southwest of Calgary, Alberta a short 45 minute drive from the Calgary International Airport.
We welcome your visit to see our cattle and learn more about our program. |

| Our herd was established in 1934 by Jim (J.B.) Cross at the a7 Ranch near Nanton and then moved west of Okotoks in 1953 under the Bar Pipe brand. After J.B.'s death, his son Donald held the reins and now, in turn, Donald's son Jay and his wife Lucy have taken over the operation.
The initial plan at Bar Pipe was to keep the purebred operation as simple as possible. Although, Donald and his father attended cattle shows and kept up with market trends they did not display any of their own cattle in the early years. The focus was kept on the annual production sale in which Bar Pipe offered up to 25 bull calves that were born in the early part of the year. As the size of the cowherd increased the marketing plan was expanded in the early 1980s to include entry in the Lethbridge Bull Sale. A couple years later saw Bar Pipe's first consignment at the Calgary Bull Sale. the main focus, however, remained on keeping top bull calves for the production sale which ran for over 50 years.
In recent years the Bar Pipe operation has undergone many changes. Calving time has been significantly moved back and the focus has shifted to marketing more two year old bulls by private treaty. Although the majority of bulls are sold to repeat customers by private treaty we still offer bulls at the Calgary and Medicine Hat Bull Sale, usually choosing a few sire groups to feature at each of these sales. We also offer bred heifers for sale in the fall, again by private treaty.
The Bar Pipe cowherd has also expanded to include the Kallal Hereford Ranch cowherd in 2007. With a strong maternal base to build on the next step has been to implement a polled division at Bar Pipe. Breeding our best 64H Ribstone daughters and granddaughters to polled bulls we plan on developing our own polled females to kickstart this side of the program. We will offer our first polled bulls for sale in 2012.
